Story Telling

Artist Statement

Story Telling, to me, is a form of expression with which stories can be interpreted or manipulated however the teller may choose for entertainment/creative purposes or to convey a specific message. A lot of the time, it’s interesting to see how others envision certain stories and represent them through different works of art- to get a glimpse into their imagination.

When thinking about what I would do for my photo, I wanted to take a preexisting story but change it to fit my own style. I thought about different popular stories already created- princesses, superheroes, fairy-tales, and fables. It was easy to choose Alice in Wonderland mainly because I thought of the queen of hearts and the comparison to an actual deck of cards. This lead me to think about different settings that could represent “Wonderland” and brainstorm how I could use the characters/plot in a creative way with keeping elements from the original.

The photograph has many little hints that are symbolic of Alice in Wonderland, the “white rabbit” wearing a watch- much like one in the story, Alice holding a deck of cards with the queen of hearts face crossed out, and the beer bottle label saying “Wonderland” and “Tea time” to hint at the Mad Hatter.

If I were to re-shoot this image I would consider adding in a third character. Originally I was going to have a Mad Hatter but my model couldn’t make it last minute. I would also like to have less glare on the bottle, make the label easier to read, and either edit out the wrinkles in the “table” or make them smoother by pulling the fabric tighter.
