Artist Statement

This photo has a more personal meaning to it. It is representative of my growth as a person in terms of who or what I allow to have power over me. The saying about the glass being ‘half empty or half full’ has always bothered me because I feel like every situation is different and you shouldn’t force yourself to always find the positive in the negative, you can just feel the emotion you feel- even the negative ones.

I chose for my model to be holding up a piece of broken glass to symbolize breaking that hold that somebody’s words would have over you. It has water because it shows it was once a glass of water and I wanted it to only be over one eye to show the conflict between following how somebody else thinks you should view things; through a certain lens or glass, or following how you directly feel without influence. I had the person in the bathroom as a setting because it makes more sense compared to a plain white or black background. It puts the character in a setting where they may have dropped a glass.

I also increased contrast because I liked the intensity of it, and I changed the photo to make it less yellow.
