Artist Statement

Rebellion is often seen as a chaotic and ineffective way to bring about change. But, there are many examples of rebellion that have imposed great success to certain groups and causes, shaping the country we live in today. Rebelling against societal norms or what is considered right is exhibited throughout history with the Civil Rights movement, Women’s Suffrage, Desegregation, and in more recent times with Same-sex marriage and the Black Lives Matter movement. As a country, America is also built upon rebellion against the British and the creation of the Declaration of Independence.

Although there are so many ways to exemplify the idea that rebellion can be positive, I chose to use the Women’s Suffrage movement. More specifically, the ratifying of the 19th amendment in 1920 which granted women the right to vote. During this period, women were not seen equally to men and did not have many of the rights they possessed. Leading up to this ratification, women throughout America united as one in protests rebelling against the idea that only men should be allowed to vote. I think this was a pivotal point in history because it gave women more of a voice and paved way to a future of equality among both sexes.

My photo incorporates a 19th amendment voting ballot filled out, a lipstick, and some jewelry. I think the jewelry and make-up shape the picture and provide a sort of frame to the ballot to show it is the most important part and I also like the feminine touch it adds.

If I were to re-shoot, I would experiment with adding a model to the picture- whether it’s a hand signing or a parallel between a man and a woman crossing off the different “For” and “Against” boxes. I enjoyed taking this picture though and overall I like the message I’m conveying and its simplicity.
